Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 1:34 PM EST on November 27, 2009

… Cold temperatures likely Saturday morning…

mainly clear skies and light winds will allow for rapid cooling
after sunset this evening. High temperatures today will only be
in the 60s… and temperatures will fall to near 40 north and 50
south by midnight. By morning… temperatures should bottom out
near freezing for the normally colder areas of the Nature
Coast… and in the mid 30s for the coldest areas of our central
and southern zones. Lee County may escape the 30s this time with
lows mainly in the 40s.

Patchy frost is one concern during the overnight hours. The ground
is still warm… so most likely the frost will be confined to the
rooftops of houses and cars. North of Tampa Bay… we may see
temperatures drop to near freezing before sunrise. These areas
could see frost on the ground and damage to tender vegetation is
likely where frost does occur.

Residents should cover or move indoors any cold sensitive plants
by this evening. Pets in Florida are not accustomed to the cold
and should be brought indoors for the night.

Fire Weather Watch
Statement as of 4:38 am EST on November 27, 2009

… Red flag warning remains in effect from 11 am this morning to
6 PM EST this evening…
… Fire Weather Watch remains in effect from Saturday morning
through Saturday afternoon…

A red flag warning remains in effect from 11 am this morning to
6 PM EST this evening. A Fire Weather Watch remains in effect
from Saturday morning through Saturday afternoon.

Dry air will continue to move into the region on northerly winds.
This will result in 4 or more hours of relative humidity below
35 percent late this morning through the late afternoon. Winds of 10
to 15 mph will accompany the arrival of this dry air mass and will
contribute to the critical fire weather conditions. Very similar
conditions will exist again on Saturday in the same areas with
lighter northerly winds.

Precautionary/preparedness actions…

A red flag warning is issued when very favorable conditions for
the spread of wildfire are occurring now… or will occur within
24 hours.

Please advise the appropriate officials or fire crews in the
field.

Special Weather Statement

Posted by Ginny on October 15, 2009

From the National Weather Service via Weather Underground:

Special Weather Statement
Expires 7:00 PM EDT on October 15, 2009

Statement as of 10:39 am EDT on October 15, 2009

… First strong cold front of the season to move through west central
and southwest Florida Friday and Friday night ushering in much drier
and noticeably cooler air for the upcoming weekend…

A developing area of low pressure over the eastern U.S. Will push
the first strong cold front of the season through west central and
southwest Florida during Friday and Friday night. Ample low level
moisture and instability will support a line of showers and thunderstorms
along and ahead of this front as it moves into the region on Friday.
Current timing of the front will bring showers and thunderstorms into
the Nature Coast during Friday morning… with this activity spreading
south across the remainder of west central and southwest Florida during
Friday afternoon and evening.

Ample moisture and adequate instability combined with moderate prefrontal
convergence along and ahead of the front may support some strong to
marginally severe storms as the front moves south through the region…
with the main hazards being isolated damaging winds… large hail… and
possible tornadoes and marine waterspouts. All residents and visitors
of west central and southwest florid should remain alert to rapidly
changing weather conditions on Friday. If threatening weather approaches
your locations… move indoors immediately.

In the wake of the front a much drier and noticeably cooler air mass
will overspread all of the region late Friday night into the weekend
on a brisk northwest to northerly wind flow. High temperatures on Friday
will be near seasonal norms… then will fall to some 10 to 15 degrees
below normal during the upcoming weekend with daytime highs expected
to be in the lower 70s over the Nature Coast… mid 70s central… and
upper 70s far south. Overnight lows will be quite cool with lows falling
into the mid and upper 40s over the Nature Coast… to the lower and
mid 50s central… and upper 50s to around 60 far south.

A brisk northwest to northerly wind flow in the wake of the front will
produce choppy rough seas over the Gulf waters and increase the risk
for rip currents and large breaking waves along area beaches late
Friday night through the upcoming weekend. The increase in winds and
seas will make for hazardous boating conditions… and mariners…
fishermen… and boating enthusiasts may want to postpone trips into
the Gulf until conditions improve early next week.

Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your local media for further
updates on this developing weather situation.

Posted by Ginny on September 29, 2009

Assalamu alaikum, there seem to be some interesting shows on this station, the “True Talk” show being the most interesting for me, described as an “Arab Muslim” talk show? Hmmm, are we talking about “arab and Muslim” or just “Arab Muslims” What about American Muslims, or African Muslims, etc.? Will have to listen to see what the show is about. Sorry, but I get kinda sensitive when “other” Muslims besides Arabs seemingly get left out of the picture.

Hernando student lied about seeing Muslim student sit during Pledge, officials say

Posted by Ginny on September 2, 2009

Assalamu alaikum, I saw this on the news last night and, well, wanted to blog about it.

Heather Lawrence, a 16-year-old junior at the school, has said she was walking by another homeroom Wednesday morning when she saw a girl with the traditional Muslim head scarf sitting during the pledge.

Later, Lawrence said she confronted the girl, told her she should stand during the pledge and, according to her own account and a school report, said, “Take that thing off your head and act like you’re proud to be an American.”

“take that thing off your head”? That quote (spoken by Ms. Lawrence herself when it was on the news last night) was wwhat brought me out of my illness-induced stupor. “What?” I thought, and it was said, in a, I’m not sure how to frame it, but it was very disrespectful. But it gets better, and that’s to say the very least…

But Lawrence could not have seen what she said she saw, Springstead principal Susan Duval said Monday.

“This girl lied,” Duval said. “I have confirmed with the homeroom teacher the young lady stood for the pledge.”

The girl and her parents also insist she was standing, Duval said.

And Lawrence never left her own homeroom, according to her teacher, Duval said.

Duval said Lawrence claimed she was asked to take the homeroom attendance count to the office. But Duval said her homeroom teacher disputes that.

“She never left homeroom,” Duval said.

“She’s compounded the story as an explanation as to why she felt it was OK to make a very disparaging comment to this young lady,” Duval said.

OK, so if Ms. Lawrence never left home room, and the Muslim girl’s home room teacher says that the girl was standing, then when, why, and how did Ms. Lawrence get the opportunity to make this kinda remark? And how in th eheck do you just walk into someone else’s home room, unannounced, presumably, and just walk up to someone, tell them to stand up, and to “take that thing off your head”? And when Ms. Lawrence talked about it, she sounded so proud (and full) of herself, like she’d done something wonderful and thought she should be commended for it, and didn’t (or couldn’t) seem to understand why she was being suspended, I mean, wasn’t she doing the “patriotic” thing? Oh, but if the girl was standing, etc., then Heather Lawrence had no business saying anything to her, imho.

Mark Lawrence, reached by phone on Monday, defended his daughter.

“My daughter told me what she saw and I stand by what my daughter saw,” Mark Lawrence said. “I think (school officials) are trying to do some damage control.”

Damage control? Because of what?

He noted that after a conference Monday, his daughter’s suspension was reduced to three days. She will return to school Wednesday.

Duval said that’s because school officials often reduce punishments when there has been a successful parent conference. Mark Lawrence refused last week to sign his daughter’s referral. He did this morning, Duval said.

And no harsher punishment for lying? “I’m trying to get this resolved and move on,” Duval replied.

Listen, if Ms. Lawrence’s home room teacher said she never left home room, and the home room teacher of the Muslim student said that the girl was standing, then I’m still having a hard time figuring out how and when this supposed incident took place. And perhaps it’s because I’m sick, but something just doesn’t make sense to me. However, if two teachers say that Ms. Lawrence was lying, well then, I’m sorry, it appears that she wasn’t telling the truth, Sorry Mr. Lawrence.

After the incident, Lawrence was asked by a teacher why she confronted the girl.

“She began to rant that she was enlisting and was going to Iraq and that basically because the girl looks Middle Eastern, that makes her an enemy because all Iraqis are Middle Eastern,” according to the referral signed by assistant principal Stephen Crognale.

Oh boy, I’m not even coherent enough to even comment on this.

Lawrence, who says she plans to enlist in the Army, denied Friday she said that or feels that way. She told the St. Petersburg Times that telling the student to take off her hijab was a little “over the edge” and that she would consider apologizing.

Of course, I mean, perhaps a 5-day suspension (not to mention lying about at least parts of the story) and being barred from participating in Junior ROTC extracurricular activities wouldn’t have had something to do with wanting to “apologize” would it? Or of course, you’re apologozing because you just plain have to?

That apology is also part of Lawrence’s discipline, assistant superintendent Sonya Jackson said Monday.

Major Dennis Jolissaint of Springstead’s JROTC program would not comment specifically on Lawrence’s case this afternoon. But any JROTC member given out-of-school suspension is automatically barred from taking part in JROTC extracurricular activities for 60 days, Jolissaint said.

And there’s more, it seems some Conservative and anti-Muslim bloggers are taking up this story, etc. But of course, I’m not surprised about that. And I’d write more but my energy level has faded long ago, and I’m even wondering why I drug myself out of bed to even blog about this.

And below is a link to the news story (video), as well as a link to a written news story (which I quoted from above).

Statement as of 3:38 PM EDT on July 30, 2009

… Storms with excessive lightning expected over south Central Lake
County… Orange County… northwestern Osceola County… southwestern
Seminole County…

At 335 PM EDT… weather radars were detecting multiple outflow
boundaries from earlier convection converging on the greater Orlando
Metro area. The collision is expected to occur through 530 PM EDT.

Storms that develop from this collision will be capable of producing
excessive lightning strikes… defined as 12 or more cloud to ground
strikes per minute. If you are outdoors… finish or prepare to
suspend activities. Take shelter in a building or hard topped
automobile if thunder is heard. Open shelters found in Parks… on
beaches or Golf courses offer no protection from the dangers of
lightning. Stay away from trees.

In addition… steering winds aloft are very light… which will
result in little… if any storm motion. Torrential rainfall will be
possible… with local amounts up to three inches.

Locations in the path of the lightning storm include Altamonte
Springs… Kissimmee… Winter Garden… and Goldenrod.

Lightning is the number one weather related killer in Florida.

Visitors to the Orlando theme Parks should move indoors and away from
rides as soon as thunder is heard. Follow the directions of park
staff.

Water Manager Is Heavy Water User

Posted by Ginny on April 12, 2009

But at least one member of Swiftmud’s Governing Board used nearly six times as much water last year as the average homeowner, utility records show. Business owner Jennifer Closshey’s Plant City property drank up about 523,000 gallons, much of it outdoors, during a time when her organization was warning against overuse.

Water Manager Is Heavy Water User | theledger.com | The Ledger | Lakeland, FL

Don’t you just love the hypocrisy of it all? The water managers telling everyone else they gotta conserve (which they probably do, I’m not arguing that), but they not doing it themselves? If government agencies, employees, politicians, bankers, etc., had to live like the rest of us? They’d probably die of a nervous breakdown or something.

Florida Weather

Posted by Ginny on April 5, 2009

Assalamu alaikum, it’s really warm today, almost hot, feels really summerlike. However, by tomorrow night, we’re going to have lows in the 40’s with highs in the 60’s Tuesday and Wednesday. And while it’s going to be much colder in many places, it’s really going to be a shock to the system to go from 85 degree highs, lows in the upper 60’s, to highs in the 60’s and lows in the 40’s.

I guess we are just due for one more good cool snap before late spring/early summer weather really sets in in earnest.

My Thoughts on Proposition 8 and Gay Marriage in General

Posted by Ginny on November 16, 2008

Assalamu alaikum, I feel a bit conflicted on the gay marriage issue. From a religious point of view, homosexuality is not permissible, and by extention, marriage between two people of the same sex isn’t permissible either. This is the same in the case of two unmarried people, a man and a woman, engaging in sexual relations, this is not permissible either, unless they are married.

However, I also have a tendency not to want to get into people’s business. And I also don’t want to be viewed as some sort of close-minded bigot either. So it makes me feel all the more conflicted when this is made into some sort of a civil rights, a la “just like other minorities”, kind of an issue. And I don’t think this is a civil rights issue, and I don’t think it can be compared to the times when people of different races couldn’t get married, to me, that is just not the same, especially from an Islamic perspective.

My problem with many of the anti-gay marriage amendments that have come up, and speaking for the one we had on the ballot in Florida, for example, was that the amendment stated specifically that “marriage is between one man and one woman”. Now firstly, I don’t really think the government should really be in the business of defining marriage in the first place, and secondly, as a Muslim, I didn’t feel that I could, in good conscience, vote “yes” on this particular amendment, because of the wording, and the fact that Allah gives men the right to four wives (not that all men should necessarily do this and I’m not attempting to go down this road and open up that can of worms). But polygyny is a right given by Allah, and I felt that by voting “yes” on this amendment, that I’d be voting “no” on something that Allah has ordained, i.e., men having multiple wives, as the exact wording in the amendment on the ballot in my state was “between one man and one woman”. Perhaps if it had said “between a man and a woman”, then I might have considered it.

In my mind, I put homosexuality, and I’m saying, the actual act, not necessarily the feelings, since to my knowledge, Islamicly speaking, there is a difference between the two, and heterosexual sex between two unmarried people, in the same category, i.e., it’s not permissible. Having said that, I know people who are together and not married, and I know people who are gay. Does this mean I’m going to run into their bedroom and physically stop them from doing whatever it is they are doing at that moment? No, because, uh, that is totally unrealistic, and would probably be extremely embarrassing for everyone involved. Would I sit them down and tell them that what they are doing is wrong? Probably not, because from what I’ve learned, when giving advice, it must not only be done in a calm and mature way (as opposed to being harsh and overbearing), I’ve also been taught that it’s not a good idea to give advice if the person on the receiving end of that advice would not take it very well or would not be receptive to taking that advice. So for me, no it’s not right, however, I also understand that we live in a country with people of differing religious views, or no religion at all. And our government should be able to accommodate everyone, that is, of course, if we are suppose to have a government that is forbidden from promoting one religion over another.

However, if I’m asked specifically, “do you agree with gay marriage” or “what do you think of homosexuality”, my answer would be, as a Muslim, my religion tels me it’s wrong. However, I am not in a Muslim country, and there are a lot of things that are legal in this country, that Islamicly speaking, are not permissible, and consuming pork and alcohol are but two examples of this. So I don’t see homosexuality as a special issue, it’s just part of the rubric of things that Allah has commanded us as Muslims not to engage in.

As far as Proposition 8 in California goes, I’m not sure what the exact wording was on the measure, however, if it was anything like the wording in Florida, I might well have voted “no” for it also. I think that Muslims who are saying that Muslims need to speak out strongly against gay marriage, and who also need to support measures such as Proposition 8, perhaps need to take a more nuanced view of the whole “gay marriage” issue, as much of the wording going into measures striking down gay marriage, or introducing laws in states that don’t already have gay marriage on the books forbidding it, say specifically “one man and one woman”. So, in supporting anti-gay marriage ballot measures and legislation, do Muslims want to also, at the same time, throw away any hope in the future of having polygynous marriages legally recognized in the US? Because many of the groups who are anti gay marriage, are also anti polygyny (and Anti Muslim too). So I’m just saying this is an issue that IMHO, we need to be careful about, as it could hurt us too, in the long run.

As far as two people of the same sex wanting to get married goes, homosexuality is something I’ve never been able to understand. Perhaps that sounds naive, perhaps that sounds close-minded, but I have to be honest about that. But I can understand the desire to have this “right” bestowed on you, when you are seeing heterosexual couples enjoying this right. And if you love someone and you want to enter into the ultimate commitment with them, but you can’t because of the laws in your state, I can understand how hurtful that could be. Having said that, though, I can’t in good conscience, get behind efforts to legalize gay marriage, whether in California or anywhere else, because though Man may be saying it’s OK, God says otherwise! However, I also don’t have a desire to introduce any anti-gay marriage amendments either. And gay marriage is not the same as interracial marriage, civil rights, or any other comparison, simply because God never said, in my religious tradition anyway, that people of differing races, abilities, cultures, etc. *couldn’t* marry. So I’m just putting that in there before I get any “but what if they said blind or disabled people couldn’t marry, what would you say then?”. It just ain’t the same thing, sorry.

So I guess you could say I take a bit of a neutral position on this issue, because I don’t see it as my issue, and I don’t like the wording or who’s behind many of the heretofore proposed, and in some cases passed, amendments and ballot measures. I don’t think the government should be telling anyone who and who can’t get married, whether it’s a homosexual couple or a man marrying his second wife. At the same time, though, as I said before, I don’t agree with gay marriage on religious grounds. So perhaps “neutral” isn’t the right word for my opinion on this issue, “nuanced” might be a more appropriate term to use.

My Early Voting Experience

Posted by Ginny on November 2, 2008

Assalamu alaikum, well, I voted early this year, mostly because I didn’t want to have to worry about it on Election Day and risk the horrifying (to me anyway) possibility that I’d get so preoccupied with work and other matters that I’d forget to vote.

So my husband and I got up last Saturday morning, October 25th, and went to the voting location here in Winter Haven. We got there at about a quarter to ten or so, and the line was already out the door, almost out into the parking lot. I think we waited for maybe 45 minutes or an hour, I’m not sure. While we were standing in line, a poll worker (I think) came up to us and informed us that there was an audio (seemingly accessible) way that I could vote, whee I’d wear a headset and push a button corresponding to my choice! I thought this was great, I could vote and do it all by myself. However, my husband suggested that, as much as accessible voting was a good thing, that if there was no way to verify my vote, then perhaps we should just do like we’d always done and use a paper ballot, where he assisted me in filling in my answers. And as much as I wanted to try the other option, I reluctantly agreed with him, as I’d rather my vote count, I mean, actually count, and have it be what I’d actually intended it to be, rather than for it to be “accessible”. And not be able to actually verify my choices, or to have them flip to something else I didn’t want, or to have my vote thrown out for some other technicality, like I didn’t push on the button hard enough, or I pushed it too hard, or something like that.

And as I’m thinking about it now, it really was, well, I’d not say a “painful” decision, but a hard decision. Having to choose between accessibility and my votes actually counting. To be honest, the thought just occurred to me, why couldn’t they have paper ballots in Braille? I’d think with the computer technology being the way that it is, they’d not be too costly to produce? But I’m sure there’s some justification as to why a blind woman who reads Braille can’t reasonably expect to walk into a polling place on election day, even if she called ahead and requested it, to have a paper ballot in Braille waiting for her, when she gets there. I mean, if they can put your phone bills and utility bills in Braille, why not the ballot? Or if I can go out to a restaurant and be offered a Braille menu, why can’t I get a Braille ballot on election day? And that’s something that, for some odd reason, I’d not thought of until now. Hmmm…

So anyway, my husband and I finally get to the front of the line, I swipe my state ID card into this machine that looks like the machines they have at the stores at the checkout counters, where you swipe your debit card through and put in your pin number. Only on this machine, we had to confirm my address, and I had to sign my name (I sure hope my signature matched), and then they assigned us a little booth to vote, and I did.

Gosh, now I’m paranoid that my vote somehow didn’t count, even though I checked the list from the Florida Division of Elections and my name’s on it, does that mean my vote counted? Oh boy, why didn’t I think of that before?

Here I was all excited about voting, and now, well… It’s just that I’d read an article on a blog a few days ago about a lady who’s vote was rejected, it was an absentee ballot, that was rejected, because her signature didn’t match the one on file, and she wasn’t allowed to redo her vote, or do anything that would have verified it was actually her that voted… *sigh*

So anyway, I voted, we put the ballot into this little, I don’t know, thingy, and we left. When I got in the car and looked at the time it was 11:15 AM. We then went to the sotre to get a few things and then went home.

I’m just wanting this election to be over, because this is too stressful for me. I *really* don’t want McCain to win! And if he does, well, I guess if I survived the last 8 years of Bush, Inshallah, I can survive the next at least 4 years of McCain. But if Palin somehow becomes President, well, oh my, then I’m not sure. I thought it couldn’t get any worse than Bush, I thought that no one any more ignorant couldn’t have been pushed into public office, and then they went and found Sarah Palin. And that’s all that needs to be said about that.

Early Voting :: Lori Edwards, Polk County Supervisor of Elections

Posted by Ginny on October 3, 2008

Assalamu alaikum, Well, I can actually take the bus on Saturday, when this starts anyway, to vote! I’ll need to call the supervisor of elections to confirm this, but if that’s the case, then I’m voting the first chance I can. According to this link, Early voting starts October 20th, in Florida, that is. I’ll also need to make sure I’ll get assistance at the early voting location, just in case my husband is not able to come with me.
