Why Is This?

Posted by Ginny on October 27, 2009

Assalamu alaikum, this kind of runs in the same vein as the “giving dawa” post, and that is the topic of discussing Islam in sub-Saharan Africa, or discussing Muslims in Africa, or talking about African countries that have significant, if not majority, Muslim populations. And that is, what I take to be, the complete dismissal of African Muslims, or how Islam is practiced/manifests itself in African countries. I’ll try to give an example of what I mean.

I had an experience a few weeks ago, when I was telling a sister about my husband’s home country, how upwards of 90% of the population is Muslim there, how I’ve traveled there before, etc. I’d probably spent about five minutes describing my husban’ds home country, etc., when the sister says to me “Have you ever been to the Holy Land” (I think she was Palestinian but can’t remember now). I told her that I hadn’t, to which she responded “well, you really should go”. Perhaps she meant nothing by it, perhaps she didn’t know what to say so that was the best she could think of to say, perhaps she had no idea that there were any Muslims in Africa, at least in Sub-Saharan Africa anyway.

However, the comment came across to me as dismissive, at the very least. Here, I’d just spent the past few minutes telling her about The Gambia and that’s all she could think of to say? I felt like she was saying “you shouldn’t have gone there, you should have went here”, which reminds me of another time I mentioned that I wanted to go back to The Gambia one day, and being asked “have you ever been to Hajj?” And when I said no, I got the “well you really need to go to Hajj first” treatment. Well of course! Which to me wasn’t even worth saying, because everyone should strive to go to Hajj, I mean, it’s not like it’s an either or thing, that if I go to The Gambia that I can’t go to Hajj.

But it’s the completely looking over, the complete dismissal of Muslim Africans that I detect in these sorts of expressions that really bothers me. The “why would you even want to go over there when you can go to Jordan or Palestine” sentiment, for example. And I know I shouldn’t or needn’t ask why, but why is this? Is it because you think African Muslims are so much lesser than you because they’re not Arab nor not white? I can definitely see why many African Muslims in this country are just starting their own masjids, because if a totally blind white Muslim woman like myself can detect the superiority complex that some Muslims have, then I’m sure many African Muslims can see it too. And who wants to be told that your Islam isn’t as real as someone else’s, or that you’re not a “true” Muslim?

Today’s Track

Posted by Ginny on July 18, 2009

Assalamu alaikum, haven’t done one of these in a minute…

Today’s track is by Salif Keita, called Djembe.

I heard this on the African Music channel via AOL Radio, and spent much of the evening last night looking for the song. Even missed most of The Dizz’s show looking for it. Ha! Anyway… It’s an absolutely beautiful song. Sorry I couldn’t find a higher quality clip.

And as always I’m a totally blind person here, so I don’t take responsibility for the video content, can only speak for the audio here.

Enjoy.

Waking Up to Youssou Ndour

Posted by Ginny on June 19, 2009

… was strange… It was 2 something in the morning (and I was glad that it wasn’t 5 or 6 because I could go back to sleep). And I tend to have strange/weird thoughts when I’m half asleep. Like… “Wow, Youssou can really sing”, uh, we already knew that didn’t we? I woke up to a live clip of one of his tracks off the Egypt album, and it sounded better live than on the album itself. And I thought”wow, I gotta find that, wonder if there’s a live version of the album?” Then, when they were interviewing him, I thought, “wow, his English seems to have really gotten better”, because he always sounds a bit stunted when he sings in English, kinda like you can really tell it’s not his first language, heck, it’s probably his fourth or fifth or … tenth? And then I was trying to figure out what movie/documentary they were talking about, and then the program moved on to something else, so I just went back to sleep. With a mental note in my head to try to listen today, and to see if I can find any live recordings of the tracks on the Egypt album. I can’t tell you how I felt when I first heard that album. I was going through a rough time then, we were in the middle of the Iraq war, there seemed to be, if memory serves, some beheadings going on, it was just a rough time. This is one time that the “music is haram” meme just doesn’t sit well with me, and yeah, it’s probably my nafs and all, however, this album had and has the potential to touch a lot of people and to do a lot of good, and I can’t see how that could be a bad thing, just because it’s “music”. It’s truly a beautiful album, even if some think “he’s just trying to appeal to the Arab market”, well, whatever. I think at this point Youssou Ndour could put out an opera album, an American country album, pretty much anything he wants, and it’d probably sound good. And to me, he represents Senegal to me, and not certain ohter American pop stars… And btw, Baba Maal also has new material out now as well.

Jammeh’s Latest Ploy, and some Thoughts on the Freedom Newspaper

Posted by Ginny on March 30, 2009

Assalamu alaikum, this is coming from the Freedom Newspaper, which imho, I take any news coming from them with a grain of salt, or maybe I should say, a huge bar of salt, although, as much as I hate to admit it, a lot of the time, they end up being right, although they also publish tabloid-esque, sensational accounts of people’s private lives, as well. And while a lot of this kind of sensational journalism is in regard to members currently serving in Jammeh’s government, I still think that the standard should be upheld that people’s private lives, who they marry, divorce, etc., should be off limits. I think that the sign of a great leader, pbulication, etc., is not how they treat the people they like and agree with, but how they deal with those they don’t necessarily like and agree with. Because it’s all well and good to talk about democracy, and good governance, journalistic principles, etc., when you agree with the people you’re talking to. However, when you descend into backbiting, name-calling, mud-slinging, dirt-digging, etc., with those you don’t agree with, simply and only because you don’t agree with them, or you think that they’re wrong, and while at the same time you talk of how you stand for all of the laudable principles I just spoke of a few words back, that just seems hypocritical to me. And anyway, I’m digressing.

I only mentioned Freedom Newspaper’s, what I consider to be, a bit questionable journalistic ethic, to segway into an article they published this morning, entitled, “Breaking News:President Jammeh threatens to seize compounds of polygamous men!!!!”.

The gist of the story seems to be that polygamous men are lazy, spending time at the “bantaba” (which is rather like a public square, where men sit and chat and drink ataya), the stereotype is that the men sit and drink ataya all day, while their wives, and other women folk, slave all day, cooking, cleaning, tending crops, etc., and the men sit around trying to catch their next girlfriend/wife. And Jammeh, trying to be the saviour of all womenfolk in The Gambia, are going to save them from this, by going after polygamous men, and seizing their compounds if they’re found to be “lazy”. This is coming from the same man who said he’d divorce some wives and give them better husbands if their husbands were forcing them to support a party (anything but the APRC, ostensibly), that they didn’t want to support, or something like that. I’ll have to see if I can dig that article up, because that happened a few years ago.

I’m guessing that perhaps Jammeh has given up the “witch-hunting”, now that according to some sources, his own aunt has gotten caught up in the fray, and now that the international media has once again made Jammeh and The Gambia a world laughing-stock. So he has to come up with ever new and ingenious ways to oppress the Gambian people.

And I’m ever so tempted to say that these people need to fight, that they need to stand up for themselves, etc. But I stop, because it’s easy for me to say that, I’m not living in fear of my life. However, at the same time, you can’t just let people step on you either! I’ts really a hard one to call, though if you let people keep bullying you, it’ll keep getting worse and worse and worse, until you stand up to them.

Anyway, I hesitate in quoting or linking to anything from Freedom Newspaper, because I don’t think their articles are normally of good quality, as I said before, and I’m also not sure whether or not to believe them. Not only this, I have this nagging feeling that any time anyone gives Freedom any kind of credit, it’s kinda like the saying, you give someone an inch, they take a mile, and the next thing you know, they’ll be screaming headlines to the affect of “FREEDOM NEWSPAPER VINDICATED” or something to that affect.

The thing is, this has nothing to do, imho, with the misuse of polygamy, etc., I’m not even going there, though I do think that polygamy, in many places, is mis-practiced. However, for jammeh to personally get involved in the private lives of families and determine for himself that these men are “lazy”, obviouslly is a breach of privacy, as well as Gambian law and custom, etc. Not that that ever stopped jammeh before, but… I’m sure that like everything else, Jammeh will play around with this for a few weeks, until he gets tired, and then try something else.

Halifa Sallah Released

Posted by Ginny on March 20, 2009

Assalamu alaikum, this is good news indeed. Makes me wonder, though, if the pressure from the Amnesty International press release, along with the international coverage resulting from that, put pressure on the Jammeh government, which resulted in Sallah’s release?

It also remains to be seen if there are any more “witch hunts”? And has anyone noticed, I’ve not seen any news reports of people being “cured” for any number of diseases. At least not recently anyway.

Wow…

Posted by Ginny on March 18, 2009

Assalamu alaikum, well, the perverbial, uh, “stuff” has hit the fan… The story of the “witch-hunt” going on in The Gambia has broken internationally, and not just on online lists and news sites dealing with Gambian issues. The stories all pretty much seem to have the same outline, and I present a few links below. What is worrying for me is the fact that many people are fleeing into Senegal to escape this, and some accounts have it that the Senegalese gendarmerie has captured some of the Gambian military who were in pursuit of those fleeing. This is not good, and has the potential to get even worse. The afore-mentioned links follow:

Witches’ Taken From West African Nation, Forced to Drink …

Gambian state kidnaps 1000 villagers in mass purge of ‘witchcraft’

Outcry as 1000 ‘witches’ rounded up and given hallucinogens

Gambia gripped by fear as leader scours country in search of witches

1000 alleged “Witches” kidnapped by security forces

Up to 1000 detained in Gambia witch hunt: Amnesty

BBC NEWS | Africa | Gambians ‘taken by witch doctors’

Rights Group: ‘Witch Doctors’ Abduct, Poison Gambian Villagers -

And according to Google there are 322 related articles to the ones I’ve linked above.

I keep wanting to say that this is not good, and I know this is a profound understatement. I’m not even sure if Jammeh’s so-called cure for HIV/AIDS even got this much coverage? Though I think the press release from Amnasty International has had a lot to do with the amount of coverage.

NEW PRIME MINISTER APLOGIZES TO EX PRIME MINISTER

Posted by Ginny on January 3, 2009

Assalamu alaikum, I’ve read this article like three times, and I still don’t understand what exactly happened. Just that the current (and self-appointed) prime minister apologized to a former prime minister. For what, I still don’t get. I like The Gambia Journal, but this article seems to be poorly written. But then again, perhaps the headache I currently have is preventing me from understanding something…

Four Die in New Year’s Day Stampede in The Gambia

Posted by Ginny on January 3, 2009

Assalamu alaikum, so let me get this straight, four people die in a stampede over fireworks, and what does Jammeh do? No speeches on the need for crowd control or anything like that, no, he wants to put on an even bigger and better display?! Can someone explain this to me? Sounds like someone who’s got a weak ego, and just can’t stand anyone having or doing anything “better” than him.

I’m wondering if the thought that an even bigger and “better” extravaganza than the one where the stampede occurred in the first place could, uh, well, cause the very same thing to happen again?

IMHO, let’s take steps to lessen the risk of this sorta thing happening again, and then we can have our little extravaganza. Or better yet, why not spend the money that would be spent on something like this on, hmmm, maybe taking care of your own people? Instead of trying to massage your bruised ego.

Thione Seck Vs. Youssou Ndour

Posted by Ginny on October 3, 2008

Assalamu alaikum, I know that I’ve posted something with a similar title before. However, perhaps “vs.” is not the way to describe these two luminaries of Senegalese music.

Both of them, imho, are incredibly gifted and talented artists, and both have amazing voices that are instantly recognizable if you’re in any way familiar with their music.

I’d describe Seck’s voice as mellow, relaxed, Ndour’s voice as phrenetic, it just grabs you. But both of their voices have qualities that just defy description.

And I’d not say I like one more than the other. I absolutely love live Youssou Ndour, and I prefer live Youssou Ndour to a lot of his studio work, especially the stuff he releases for his “international”, “Western”, “world music-listening” audience. And I prefer the “grand bal”-esque concerts, put on for Senegalese/West African consumption, to, say, the NPR/Carnegie Hall type appearances. Not that those aren’t good, but there’s something watered-down, not quite, well, I don’t want to use the terms “real” or “authentic”, but there’s an energy that is missing from the music that he puts out for the “Western” audience. I prefer the stuff he makes for the “back home”/Senegalese audience.

I’ve not heard as much live Thione Seck, as there doesn’t seem to be as much out there. Heck, there isn’t much Thione Seck internationally available, and it’s only on online Senegalese radio that I even get to hear any of his recent stuff, minus the “Orientation” album released a couple or so years ago. I’m telling you, if I could, I’d go to any proprietor of any online Senegambian media and beg them to send me some Thione Seck, as much as they have! And if I ever find myself in Dakar again, best believe I’m buyin’ out the stores!

I have actually tried sending out emails/inquiries but have heard nothing back, perhaps my messages got lost in cyberspace or translation or both. One Recommendation I’d make would be to put up an online music store, where people could buy/download the music they wanted, I don’t know call it MbalaxMusic.com, or SenegaleseMusic.com or something like that. Or, so as to Include the Gambian component, Senegambianmp3.com or something. I know there are online sites to listen to or buy African music. I’m talking about a way to make this music available online, much like a Rhapsody or a Napster. But that would not only include music released internationally, but music released for the “local market” as well. I’m not sure if this idea has already been tried, if it would even be successful, or if someone’s already done this and I’m not aware of it.

But I’d just like a way, that if I hear a song I like on say, Radio TamTam Online, Badou.com, Radio Wazapon, Chez Badou, Seneweb Radio, or RFM, and that’s just the stations I can find right now, that I could then go to a site, download the music that I wanted, burn it onto CD or put it on my mp3 player, and take it wherever I wanted.

I don’t always, well, I almost never understand the majority of what they’re saying, and my resident translator/interpretor isn’t always around to tell me. And perhaps this is more motivation for me to learn both French and Wolof, but that’s going to go on my long list of things that I’d like to do but probably will not be able to get done any time soon. Suffice it to say, though, that I really enjoy their music, and it’d just be nice if I could have greater access to the wealth of music that is out there by these and other artists.

Breaking News: What Is Yahya Jammeh Up To? > The Gambia Echo > The Gambia Echo – Online Newspaper

Posted by Ginny on October 2, 2008

Assalamu alaikum,

Unimpeachable sources from The Gambia’s State House reveal that a top-notch American security professional with years of international security expertise has sealed a deal with the autocratic regime of President Yahya Jammeh, to train a cadre of presidential guards exclusively from Jammeh’s Jola ethnic group who will henceforth, be tasked with targeted assassinations of political enemies, dissident journalists and economic saboteurs both in and out of the mini-West African state.

Breaking News: What Is Yahya Jammeh Up To? > The Gambia Echo > The Gambia Echo – Online Newspaper

This is pretty darn scary, imho, if this pans out. And this is coming from a man who supposedly just returned from Umra? Allahu Akbar!

Weird…

Posted by Ginny on August 18, 2008

Assalamu alaikum, I’ve received a strange comment, both in the comments section (which I deleted because I thought it was spam), and in my “Contact me” area. The message is purported to be from a “Raphael”, who is apparently asking for my help because he has been duped by what seems to be a 419 scam. I’m not sure if this, in and of itself, is a scam or not, as the person begins by addressing me as “Dear sir”. Now, I’m not sure if this man’s command of the English language is poor or not (it seems to be based on the writing style of the message), but anyone reading this blog for any length of time would, or seemingly should, get the impression that I am a “ma’am” and not a “sir”.

I post the message below, in its entirety, although I really hope that he’s not sent me sensitive account information, and also that he’s contacted the proper authorities, as I’m not sure why he’s asking me for help in finding whoever it is who supposedly cheated him out of his money. Why, though, he’d contact someone he didn’t know, on a blog he seemingly has never read, is beyond me, unless he, somehow is running a scam, whose premise is that he, himself has been scammed, though he’s not asked for money, etc. But anyway, here it is… He needs to contact the proper authorities in the country in which this “Raphael” is residing, and lodge a complaint with them. Sending this kind of info to an unknown person (me), after he’s supposedly been scammed, kind of shows me why he was probably scammed in the first place! This just doesn’t make sense to me, does he think I’m some kind of attorney or something. And btw, he submitted this to my comments box too (so much for caring about supplying sensitive account info.) I can tell you that these appear to be “real” addresses in Dakar, and the phone numbers seem to be cell phone numbers (which makes sense if you’re a scammer). And also from reading the messages, it looks like he’s been in contact with these people for a long time, but I’d suggest contacting the authorities in Raphael’s country of residence first, although this has such a stinch of scam that I’m surprised anyone would fall for it.

War Against Women, The Use Of Rape As A Weapon In Congo’s Civil War

Posted by Ginny on August 17, 2008

Assalamu alaikum, this is just pure, unadulterated, evil, and almost unimaginable brutality! Being raped so badly you can’t control your bodily functions, or that you need a colostomy bag! These men are not human! No human being would do this, or at least, they have no heart! Or it’s just as cold as rock or as hard as stone! This is just awful, and to have the women being blamed for it? How can they be blamed!? And to be shunned by their community and abandoned!? Is supposed “power” really that important? I’m speechless, really, I am.
