Mind, Body, Soul » Blog Archive » Sufi – Salafi Unity?

Assalamu alaikum, very thoughtful and well-written post. I think for me, and I talk about “unity” what I’m saying is that we all should agree to disagree, and respectfully so. No “bida-ing”, “takfir-ing”, “shirk-ing”, and talking about how “off the Sunnah” someone is because they are in a tariqa, practice tasawuf, or the like.

And what I don’t want to see happen is for people to talk about “unity” and that “we should respect each other as Muslims”, yet at the same time say things like “this group is so far off the Sunnah”, or whatever! How can you consider that respectful, etc.?

How can we talk about “unity” when some scholars attack other scholars and refer to them as “deviants”, etc.? What kind of unity is that?

Unless unity is based on genuine respect for each other as Muslims, scholars, laypeople, whatever, and respect even if you disagree, then I’m not sure that you can call it unity at all.

It seems that if we’re truly going to have unity, then the real issues that divide us need to be brought out, put on the table, and addressed, because just sweeping them under the carpet, and pretending that they don’t exist, in the name of “unity” just isn’t going to work, IMHO.
