BBC NEWS | Africa | Malian walks 900km to meet idol
Assalamu alaikum, wow! I might enjoy someone’s music or writing or something like that, but I’m not sure that it would drive me to walk 900 KM to see them. How much is that in miles? It’s too early in the morning for me to try to calculate that in my head.

CAIR-NET: Feces-Covered Quran Left at Tenn. Housing Complex
In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FECES-COVERED QURAN LEFT AT TENN. HOUSING COMPLEX
CAIR asks American leaders to address growing anti-Muslim sentiment
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 6/23/05) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today called on local and national leaders to address growing anti-Muslim
sentiment in our society following an apparently intentional desecration of the Quran in Nashville, Tenn.
CAIR said Islamic leaders in Nashville reported Wednesday that an Arabic-language copy of Islam’s revealed text was torn, burned, covered with excrement
and left outside an East Nashville housing complex that is home to many Muslim families.
As word of the desecration spread through the Islamic community, dozens of Muslims reportedly gathered at the site of the desecration to express their outrage.
Metropolitan Nashville Police Department Lt. Steve Hewitt told CAIR Wednesday night: “Clearly we have to be open-minded to the possibility it is a hate
crime.” He said it was still too early in the investigation to make a final determination as to motive and that he has informed the local office of the
FBI about the case.
“It would be difficult to come up with a scenario in which this incident was not bias-motivated,” said CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad. “Our nation’s
leaders need to address what seems to be a growing level of intolerance and anti-Muslim sentiment in American society.” Awad asked people of conscience
in Tennessee and throughout the nation to repudiate anti-Muslim bigotry by obtaining and reading a Quran.
CAIR made that same request earlier this month when burned copies of the Quran were found outside a Virginia mosque. Local police and the FBI are treating
that incident as a possible hate crime.

On Tuesday, CAIR urged judges meeting in North Carolina to allow use of the Quran when administering oaths. CAIR issued that call after a Guilford County
judge said that an oath taken on the Quran is not a lawful oath under state law.

[On Wednesday, the Justice Department announced that a man in Texas was sentenced to 171 months imprisonment for attempting to firebomb the Islamic Center
of El Paso.]
Following allegations that Guantanamo guards desecrated Islam’s holy text, CAIR launched a campaign, called “Explore the Quran,” designed to provide free
Qurans to Americans of all faiths. Some 14,000 of people have already taken advantage of that offer.

encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

Iviews.com: Mukhtaran Mai`s Human Rights
Assalamu alaikum, OK, so I can agree with the assertion that some non-Muslim groups have their own interests and reasons for why they may support the causes of Muslim women.
However, the thought that occurred to me, on reading this article is that sometimes I get so tired of Muslims always questioning the intentions of non-Muslims, when many of these same Muslims were nowhere to be found when the cause that the non-Muslims were / are supporting were first brought to the forefront of the world’s attention.
Where are the Muslims when people are being beaten, raped, and killed in Darfur, or when a Muslim ( Amadou Diallo ), was gunned down by New York City police?
You can’t have it both ways, you can’t get mad when non-Muslims don’t respond, i.e., during the massacres in Gujurat, India, but then question people’s intentions when non-Muslims do happen to get involved. And all the while, you’re not doing anything yourself.
And it seems all any Muslim has to do to silence any non-Muslim involvement or whatever is to mention the word “Israel”.
And it’s like if non-Muslims get involved, they get accused of trying to push the American, or Israeli, or anti-Muslim, or in this case, anti-Pakistani agenda. It’s like “we have to save the image of our nation, or the image of Islam”, even if it means pretending that domestic violence doesn’t exist in the Muslim community, or minimizing the existence of such things as honor killing, or FGM, or the abuse or oppression of Muslims in so-called Muslim lands.
As far as Muktarr Mai being used? Well, she seems smart enough to know whether or not she’s being used. And I think the contention in this article that she is being used is just another excuse made by the author of the article to justify his other assertions int he article, and to me, a way of saying that she shouldn’t be speaking out, or that maybe she shouldn’t be allowed to come to the US and further tarnish the “good name” of Pakistan and Islam.
But all I can say is where was this guy, when the story of Muktarr Mai first came to the world’s attention? Why did it take sites such as www.iviews.com such a long time to finally decide to say something about this?
You can’t very well get mad at the evil kufar if you yourself have dropped the ball in protecting “your Muslim women”, I don’t think.
And that’s the problem, gnerally, with the Muslim community as a whole. When we don’t support the rights and causes of Muslim women, yet run around talking about the rights given to women by Islam, it makes us look like hypocrites.
BTW, Sunni Sister’s blog, linked above, has some very good thoughts on this, which are expressed much better than I’m doing now.

Lucky Anyone who has pets will really like this….

Lucky
Anyone who has pets will really like this. You’ll like it even if you don’t and may decide you need one.
Mary and her husband Jim had a dog, Lucky. Lucky was a real character. Whenever Mary and Jim had company come for a weekend visit they would warn their friends to not leave their luggage open because Lucky would help himself to whatever struck his fancy. Inevitably someone would forget and something would come up missing. Mary or Jim would go to Lucky’s toy box in the basement and there the treasure would be, amid all of Lucky’s favorite toys. Lucky always stashed his finds in his toy box and he was very particular that his toys stay in the box.
It happened that Mary found out she had breast cancer. Something told her she was going to die of this disease…she was just sure it was fatal. She scheduled the double mastectomy, fear riding her shoulders.
The night before she was to go to the hospital she cuddled with Lucky. A thought struck her…what would happen to Lucky? Although the three-year-old dog liked Jim he was Mary’s dog through and through. If I die Lucky will be abandoned, Mary thought. He won’t understand that I didn’t want to leave him.
The thought made her sadder than thinking of her own death. The double mastectomy was harder on Mary than her doctors had anticipated and Mary was
hospitalized for over two weeks.
Jim took Lucky for his evening walk faithfully but the dog just drooped, whining and miserable. But finally the day came for Mary to leave the hospital. When she arrived home, Mary was so exhausted she couldn’t even make it up the steps to her bedroom. Jim made his wife comfortable on the couch and left her to nap.
Lucky stood watching Mary but he didn’t come to her when she called. It made Mary sad but sleep soon overcame her and she dozed. When Mary woke for a second she couldn’t understand what was wrong. She couldn’t move her head and her body felt heavy and hot. Panic soon gave way to laughter though when Mary realized the problem. she was covered, literally blanketed in every treasure Lucky owned! While she had slept the sorrowing dog had made trip after trip to the basement and back bringing his beloved mistress his favorite things in life. He had covered her with his love. Mary forgot about dying. Instead she and Lucky began living again, walking further and further together every night.
It’s been 12 years now and Mary is still cancer-free. Lucky? He still steals treasures and stashes them in his toy box but Mary remains his greatest treasure.
Live everyday to the fullest…because every day is a blessing from God!
